The Welsh Liberal Democrats have announced Susan Grounds as their candidate for the upcoming by-election in Cwmllynfell and Ystalyfera for Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council.

The by-election has been triggered by the resignation of the incumbent Labour councillor and will held on Thursday, April 3rd.

Susan Grounds was born and raised in Ystalyfera and has lived in Ystalyfera all her life. She is a fluent Welsh speaker and is married with two grown-up children. She has spent the last 27 years working for the NHS as a midwife, nurse and then Health Visitor in a flying start area of Ystradgynlais.

Susan Grounds has a wealth of support in working with those who require extra support and in difficult situations including with CATCH foodbank, Community Dreams, Credit Union and other voluntary organisations.

The Welsh Liberal Democrat recently won the parliamentary seat of Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe last summer which Cwmllynfell and Ystalyfera are a part of and are confident they can win the council seat.

Commenting local Liberal Democrat MP for Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe David Chadwick said:

“I’m sure local residents will agree that Susan perfectly embodies the very meaning of the phrase ‘local champion’. She is already so well known in her community and has a lifetime of public service on her shoulders.

“Fixing the Welsh NHS is our top priority and so we are tremendously proud that she has chosen to stand as a Welsh Liberal Democrat: and I’m confident she will make her community proud too.

“Having just won a banking hub for Ystradgynlais just this week, I hope the Liberal Democrats are showing we can deliver real tangible results for our communities.

“I am confident Susan Grounds will make a fantastic local councillor for Cwmllynfell and Ystalyfera and I will be out there doing all I can to get her over the line.”
