Welsh Liberal Democrat Senedd Member Jane Dodds has called on the Welsh Government to help a Powys-based cancer trust.

Speaking in the Senedd on Tuesday, Mid and West Wales MS Jane Dodds called on the Welsh Labour Government to support rural-based cancer support services, including the Bracken Trust in Llandrindod Wells.

The Bracken Trust, which has been providing vital cancer support services to residents since 1995, is facing a funding shortfall of £110,000 for the next financial year.

The trust, the only organisation of its kind in Powys, supports over 300 cancer patients and their families per year.

In her speech to the Welsh Government, Mid and West Wales MS Jane Dodds highlighted the impact that any potential cuts to services could have on those who rely on the Trust, stating that it was “vital that we ensure that rural cancer patients and their families are not being left behind.”

Support services like the Bracken Trust play a vital role in helping cancer patients throughout rural Wales, which is why the latest news around funding shortfalls is so concerning.

Without urgent intervention, we risk isolating a group of people who can ill afford to go elsewhere for support.

It has already been a difficult year for our healthcare services here in Mid Wales, but now is the time to draw a line in the sand to say no more.

The Welsh Government must step in and support the Bracken Trust, so we can ensure that cancer patients and their families are able to access support when and wherever it is needed.”
